The National Archives at Kew has a complete database index to all W097 Discharges between 1760-1854. For the 1883-1899 and 1900-1913 periods listed below, the coverage of GANDER and GANDAR is probably complete. However for the periods before and after these dates my coverage is not complete.

These erratic notes are (mostly) my own, taken down at the time for the genealogical information as I saw it. The discharge files contain much more information.

Richard GANDER 927 Horse Keeper, Army Veterinary Corps bn Lewes,Ssx. Aged 30 years nil months on Attestation 8 Nov 1914. Former Occup: Carter. Declared he'd once been sentenced to 1 month imprisonment for 'a trivial offence'. CofE. Height: 5' 5" and 158lbs in weight. NOK: Wife Emily. Particulars of Marriage: 25 Aug 1894 at St.Lukes, Brighton, Sussex, to Emily MITCHELL, spinster, 2 witnesses: Mary Ann STONEHAM and Harry PREVETT. Children: Lily Ethel GANDER bn 18 May 1900; Edith May GANDER bn 3 Jan 1902; Edward Henry GANDER bn 6 Sep 1908; Dorothy GANDER bn 17 Mar 1910; George Richard GANDER bn 3 Aug 1914. Discharged 23 Apr 1919 after 4 years 167 days service. Address: 14 Freehold Terrace, Lewes Road, Brighton, Sussex. Awarded 1914-15 Star.

Richard GANDER A/451838/7460 Private RASC (Expeditionary Force Canteens Section). Born Bexleyheath, Kent. Joined 25 Jun 1919 aged 36 years 186 days. Not Married. NOK: Lilian GWINNELL, sister, 21 ?New Road, Newlands, Peckham Rye. Trade: Motor Driver. Height: 5'6.5", weight: 180lbs, brown eyes, dark hair, sallow complexion. CofE. Previously served: RND Motor Transport & Royal Marine Artillery as Motor Driver. Discharged: 11 May 1920 as no longer required. Address on discharge: 87 Ingelow Road, Queens Road, Lavender Hill, SW.

Wallace Reginald GANDER 97834 (previously 3123) Private Labour Corps 163 Labour Coy. Previously serial No. 3123 on Attestation March 1915 for 7th Battn Hampshire Regt.On 5 Jun 1915 aged 35 years nil months. Height: 5'6". NOK: Elsie Meta GANDER, sister, same address: Rempstone, St.Margarets Road, Poole, Dorset. At some stage made L/Corporal but reverted to Private at own request. Served in France. Wounded by Gas 19 Nov 1917. Awarded British War Medal and Victory Medal.

William GANDER 122856 Gunner RGA 246 Anti Aircraft Section (also 808 Sussex RGA?). Attested for Territorial Force 20 Oct 1915. Age on Enlistment: 34 years 9 months. Born Willingdon, Sussex. Home address: 42 Priory Street, Lewes, Sussex. Height: 5'8". Weight: 150lbs. NOK: Kathleen Mary Bridget GANDER, Blue Bell Cottage, Nathasker, Nid Naas, Co.Kildare, Ireland. Aged 38 on 23 Jan 1919 when permanent address given as: Kilcullen Road, Naas, Co.Kildare. Awarded: British War Medal and Victory Medal.

William GANDER 169657 Gunner RGA. Aged 29 years 49 days at Attestation 12 Dec 1915. Trade: ?Hammer Man. Height: 5'11". Not married. Address: 6 Avelon Terrace, Lower Sydenham, Lewisham. NOK: [name?!], father, Willesden. Later, NOK: Mrs E.S. GANDER, wife, 8 Felday Road, Lewisham, SE13. Particulars of marriage: Elizabeth Sarah GOSDEN, spinster, 14 Dec 1918 at Wesley Church, Catford. No children were listed. Awarded British War Medal and Victory Medal. Discharged 28 Mar 1919 aged 32.

William GANDER T/425767 Driver RASC HT. Enlisted 15 Jul 1918 aged 46 years 4 months. Born Linfield (sic), Sussex. Trade: Farm Labourer. Height: 5'4.5". Weight: 140lbs. Brown Hair, fresh complexion, blue eyes. Address: Church View, Thakeham, Pulborough, Sussex. NOK: Esther Mary GANDER same address. Particulars of marriage: 19 May 1892 at Slaugham to Esther Mary [ ? ]. Children: Dorothy Gladys GANDER born 23 Feb 1908 at Horsham; Edith Emma GANDER born 21 May 1909 at Horsham; Freda Evelyn GANDER born 18 Apr 1913 at Horsham.

William Edward GANDER 285994 Driver, Army Service Corps (Motor Transport). Age 36 years 5 mths on call-up 31 Jan 1917. Former Occupation: Yeast Merchant. Height: 5' 6". NOK: Wife. Particulars of Marriage: Mabel PELLEY 8 Apr 1906 at Congregational Church, Southend-On-Sea. Child: William Keith GANDER bn 24 Feb 1907 at Southend-On-Sea.

William Thomas Robert GANDER 96618 (previously Serial No.TR/9/1000) Operator 27th T.R. Btn, Tank Corps. Born 11 Dec 1898, East Street, Sussex. Attested: 26 Jan 1917 aged 17 years 11 months. Not married. CofE. Address: 4 East Street, Portslade-by-Sea, Sussex. NOK: Charles GANDER, father same address. Served Russia. Discharged 24 Jun 1920. Served 3 years 263 days. Awarded British War Medal; and Victory Medal.
